Welcome to the e-geek demo site

This is the e-geek multi-purpose website package demonstration, show-casing the many features provided by the package. The package is based on a Content Management System (CMS) that makes it easy for the website owner to maintain the content and other aspects of the site. To go back to the main e-geek website at any time click Take me back! in the menu above.

How the demo site works

The demo site allows you to try out the system, you can edit the content and other aspects such as content categorisation and menus. The site is reset every four hours, at which time all changes are removed. To try the system, log-in on the left with the Username demo and Password demo.

Overview of the system

This is a very brief overview of the system, outlining the major aspects of the system and detailing a few of the functions. The system is very flexible and provides many other features and functions, but to get started all you need to know is...

  • There are many kinds of content types, some examples are Pages, Events, Polls, Images, Products and Forum topics. The type of content you're reading now is a Page. Content items, called nodes, can be placed in categories, promoted to the front page (like this one), published (made visible to anyone) or unpublished, have menu items attached to them, and have numerous other attributes.
  • To the left and righ t are some blocks. The blocks on the left are the Shopping cart (part of the optional e-commerce system) and the Log-in block. To the right are the Upcoming events, Most recent poll, and Newsletter subscription blocks. These blocks can be customised, moved around, made to show only on certain pages (the blocks on the right in this demo only appear on the front page) or removed completely. There are many other kinds of blocks available, or you can make your own.
  • At the top of the site in the header is a menu. Menus can also be placed in blocks and/or instead of the header. All menus can be edited to add/remove or modify their items.
  • The categorisation/taxonomy system is very flexible, optionally allowing heirarches, free-tagging and multiple parents. Multiple sets of categories (called vocabularies) can be created, each with their own categories (called terms). The package comes with the following vocabularies preconfigured: Main Content, Image Galleries, Forums, Newsletter (only with Newsletter option), and Catalog (only with the e-commerce option). Some types of content have their own special vocabulary that provides functions particular to that content type, such as the Catalog for products which can display product lists in various formats, or Galleries for images. Some types of content can appear in multiple vocabularies, for example Products and Images can appear in the Main Content vocabulary along with Pages.
  • There are many availabe themes (styles or graphic designs) that control how the website looks, or we can create a custom one that reflects your organisations image.

Explore!

Once logged-in, you can explore the system. Click on Create Content and then choose a content type to create pages or other items. Click on Administer to manage other aspects of the website, such as menus, blocks and themes.

When creating pages or other nodes it's a good idea to assign them to a category (section) or give them a menu item so you can navigate to it later. Nodes and categories can be edited by navigating to them and clicking the edit tab next to their title.
